RM of Argyle’s story
The Rural Municipality of Argyle No. 1 sits in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, along Highway 18. Its eastern edge meets the Municipality of Two Borders in Manitoba, and to the south it runs up against the United States border at North Dakota.
Before it was a rural municipality, the area was Local Improvement District No. 1. Argyle No. 1 incorporated as a rural municipality on December 19, 1912.
Where the name comes from isn't known for certain, since there are numerous Argyles and Argylls across Western Canada. Argyle Street in Regina and the Rural Municipality of Argyle in Manitoba were both meant to honour Sir John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, the fourth Governor General of Canada.
Today the village of Gainsborough lies within the RM, and the municipal office is located there. The Estevan section of the C.P.R. line serves Gainsborough and other nearby communities.
